What is Alzheimer's Disease?

Picture
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative neurological condition caused by nerve cell death resulting in atrophy of the brain.

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, which is predicted to become the number one health issue in Australia this century. The incidence of Alzheimer’s disease is increasing. It is thought that three percent of people aged 65- 74 have the disease and those over 85 have a higher risk closer to fifty percent.

Symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease

Picture
Alzheimer's disease is defined as "an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills, eventually even the ability to carry out the simplest tasks”.

Early symptoms of the disease, often mistakenly attributed to aging or stress, include irritability, aggression and mood swings. There can also be subtle problems with planning, attentiveness, flexibility, apathy and memory impairment. These early mild symptoms may present many years before the clinical signs of disease are evident. As the disease advances however, significant confusion, language difficulties and memory loss occurs.

What causes Alzheimer's Disease?

Scientists do not yet fully understand the causes of Alzheimer’s disease (except for the 1 – 5% of cases which have a genetic basis).

There is growing evidence that lifetime exposures to toxins, chemicals, poor diet and oxidative stress are all factors, triggering inflammatory processes and a build up of beta amyloid plaque in the brain cells’ mitochondria.

Glutathione depletion is known to be a key factor in Alzheimer’s Disease.

Electromagnetic Radiation

Scientific studies have shown that exposure to electromagnetic radiation significantly increases the risk of Alzheimer’s, or can make it rapidly worse. Wi-fi, cordless telephones and mobile phones all create microwave radiation which has been shown in scientific studies to cause genetic mutations in brain cells. These mutations may lead to dementia or cancer.

Heavy Metal Toxicity

Another part of the puzzle is exposure to toxic heavy metals. Aluminium was originally thought to be the main offender although today we realise that mercury poisoning seems a far more likely culprit. We are exposed to very high levels of mercury from dental amalgam and various dietary sources, such as fish. Chelation can remove these toxic metals from the tissues.
Some doctors have recognized the value of chelation for Alzheimer's and other degenerative disorders caused by metal poisoning and have found it to be very effective at restoring the function of older blood vessels and brain cells. Glutathione is able to chelate these toxic metals.

Possible Natural Treatments

No effective medical treatment is available for this debilitating disease, although mental stimulation, exercise and a balanced diet are all thought to help delay symptoms. Antioxidants such as Vitamin E, B6, B12, folate, and Gingko biloba are thought to be of some benefit. Glutathione is our body's own most powerful antioxidant and has an important role in the brain.

Glutathione helps fight oxidative stress and can have remarkable effects on mental performance and cognition. It is very helpful for Alzheimer’s patients to supplement their glutathione levels.

The Glutathione Connection

Picture
Loss of intracellular neuronal glutathione (GSH) is an important feature of neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The consequences of GSH depletion include increased oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and DNA and subsequent cytotoxic effects.

Glutathione deficiency contributes to oxidative stress, which plays a key role in aging and the pathogenesis of many diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Scientists have demonstrated that supplementing with glutathione precursors can product beneficial effects in slowing the progression of these diseases.

Dr David Perlmutter observed what he called the "glutathione miracle" when he gave patients with severe Parkinson's disease intravenous glutathione. Within one hour they were able to stand, walk and move their arms around again normally. He has also used glutathione extensively in cases with Alzheimer's and other dementias, multiple sclerosis, strokes and chronic fatigue with success.

How to Boost Glutathione Levels

Glutathione must be synthesised within the cells  because it cannot be transported into cells. Thus, taking glutathione orally will not work as it is simply broken down in the stomach. The novel compound RiboCeine™ is able to effectively solve this problem and deliver the essential precursor nutrients to the cells where they can then be turned into glutathione.

RiboCeine is far more effective than any other form of glutathione enhancement and is uniquely found in the supplement Cellgevity
